RELIANCE INSURANCE
Reliance Insurance Company of Philadelphia was incorporated 1841 with a capital of 0,000. In 1921 the company was bought by rival Fire Association of Philadelphia (founded 1817). The company prospered in the 1920's and even expanded during the Depression. In 1958 the Fire Association merged and consolidated all of their assets, resources and liabilities under the name of Reliance Insurance Company. Reliance Insurance Company ceased doing business in 2000, ending a 183 year history.
The original Reliance Fire Mark was flat, rectangular and made of tin, with the wording Reliance Insurance of Philadelphia on it. Reliance later changed their symbol to the keystone shaped plaque design with the letter R and 1841 date on it. This Keystone mark is of cast metal (non ferrous) construction by John Wright and measures approximately 7.50" X 8.5". The plaque is in good condition with good red paint and goldish silver letters.
American insurance company's fire marks were placed on the exterior of a house and were intended to discourage malicious arson by showing that the owner would not greatly suffer if the building were destroyed. Additionally, the mark stood as a guarantee to fire brigades that the insurance company which insured the house in question would reward handsomely the brigade extinguishing a blaze on the premises.
